A nocturne is a musical composition drawn from the night — Chopin wrote 21 of them, each tracing the texture of darkness with piano keys. The word belongs to the hours after midnight: the city emptying, the thoughts that arrive only when the day has no more use for you, the particular quality of being awake when most people are not. Night as a creative condition, not a failure of schedule.
